The original settlers of the region were the Cree, who used the area for hunting and trading. In 1882, James William Dawson founded what would become Regina, naming it after his queen, Victoria. The city quickly grew to be a thriving commercial center with a railway link to Winnipeg in 1890. By 1902, Regina had become Saskatchewan's capital city. After the Great Depression of 1929-1930, many immigrants arrived in Regina seeking work and opportunity. During World War II, Regina was designated as an important training center for new recruits from Canada and its allies in Europe.

However, if you’re looking for more wintery fun, then January–March might be the time for you! During this season, Regina gets plenty of snow which makes it great for skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and other cold-weather activities.
Regina has a semi-arid continental climate with warm, dry summers and cold winters. Our summers typically range from 60°F to 80°F (15°C to 27°C) during the day and cool off at night. Winters can be quite cold with temperatures below freezing throughout much of the season. Expect plenty of snowfall in the winter months!
